How does the new Electric System work?

The Electric System is made of a series of elements that are fundamental for the operation of the system itself, and of an equipment that may vary depending on the width of the house. The latest Italian rules on Safety fix two basic power levels, depending on the dimensions on the house: 3 kW (minimum value for houses up to 75 sq. m.) and 6 kW (minimum value for houses larger than 75 sq. m.).The contractual power, provided by the electric company chosen by the client, is usually assigned following these standards, even though the user can always choose a more powerful system. Regarding electric systems that already exist, the average power was set at 3 kW even if the house was larger than 75 sq. m. If the users need more energy – for example, when using an induction cooking hob instead of a gas one – they can always contact their energy supplier and ask for an increase of the power of the system, from 3 kW to 4,5 kw, 6 kW or more.
The new switchboard is usually larger than the traditional models, has a general switcher and at least two differential ones. The number of lines depends on the size of the house and on the power level; it also has a counter to measure the usage of electricity. The electric cables move from the general switcher to the Single Switchboard, located inside the house, that contains the magnetic-thermal switches and the differential switch called “circuit breaker”. This is the controlling part of the System. The Electric System of the house is also formed by the wall sockets for the appliances, the light switchers and a grounding system that leads to the Switchboard. From the Switchboard, the Electric System is divided into three circuits:
A 16 Ampere Circuit for the wall sockets
A 10 Ampere one for the lights and one for the power source
A 12 V circuit for the internal call circuits (like the sound alarm of the bathroom).

The wall sockets are positioned at 30 cm from the floor or at 110 cm in the kitchen and the bathroom, while the switches are always at 110 cm from the floor. There are three electricity cables: one for the electricity phase, one for the neutral and one for the grounding.

The latest Italian Rules on Safety have introduced a categorization of the Electric System, divided into three levels depending on their equipment and comfort standards.

Level 1: Minimum Standard

The wall sockets must be equally allocated along the walls; at least one socket must be placed by the entrance of each room.
There must be at least two groups of wall sockets in the bathroom, independently from the energetic level of the house.
There are minimum heights for the wall sockets in the kitchen; they depend on the structure of the apartment.
At each telephonic socket or TV socket must be associated a group of wall sockets in a box containing a minimum number of plugs; in the case of the TV socket, there must be at least six of them.
The switcher of the light of every room must be put at least at the entrance of the room itself, internally or outwardly; of course there can be also more than one.
In the entrance room of the house and on the corridors there must be at least one light point and one wall socket point. The light point is mandatory also in the storage closets.
In the gardens, terraces, balconies and porches larger than 10 sq. m. there must be installed at least one light point and one wall socket point, activated by a switch in which there must be an indication light that signals if it is turned on.
In the cellars and car boxes at least one light point and one socket point are necessary, unless they are fed by services in the common areas.
It is mandatory to install security light gears to assure a minimum light in case of blackout; at least one light point in houses up to 100 sq. m. , 2 or 3 for larger houses or houses that are built in more than one level.

Level 2: Middle Standard

It has all the standards of Level 1, plus it has installed a system that controls the electric charge and unplugs non-priority loads in case of passing the predefined threshold, in order to avoid continuous losses of electricity due to energy overloads.

Level 3: High Standard

It has all the standards of Level 2, plus the use of innovative implants, among which the use of Domotics that realize at least four of these functions:

Anti-Intruder device
Control and handling of the electric charge
Control and handling of the lights (light sceneries)
Handling of the temperature in the single rooms
Control and computerization of the rolling shutters
Remote control of some functions (via the Internet or via sms)
Sound diffusion system
Smoke detectors and fire-fighting installation
Anti-flooding installation and gas detectors
